WAR PICTURE: IRAQ 2002-

A donkey stands still
its wooden cart wheels blocked.
Two soldiers with machine guns stand by
One makes a report.
The other stares at a bottle in his hand
machine gun at present' arm.

A civilian on the left edge of the cart
bends over looking in.
It is hard to make out what is going on.
In the shadows of the opposite side
one civilian lifts another
to unharness the donkey.

From the opening at the rear of the cart
hay piled on top
are rockets peeping out.

I think of rag-tag militias in the 13 Colonies
their outwitting the British
all in regular army lines.
What the hell are we doing here.
