the tasseled 
leaves of mesquite 
scrub
fili-foliate
sage
the leathered leaves
of shin oak
in a tussle
of sight 
and scent 
and sound
sand rides the
rhythm
of the road
enveloping
and then revealing
an edge
a distant curve
a tango of wind
and sand 
and undulations 
of form
where 
leathered leaves
drum
drum back
the sound
of the lover’s 
pelting caress
a great Appaloosa
sets its
spotted blanket
to the wind
its tail and mane
caught
in the scent
of etched 
Artemisia
and dry sand
