Poet
Clifton served as Poet Laureate of Maryland
from 1979 to 1982. Her achievements also include fellowships and
honorary degrees from Fisk University, George Washington University,
Trinity College, and other institutions; two grants from the
National Endowment of the Arts; and an Emmy Award from the American
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Clifton is Distinguished
Professor of Humanities at St. Mary’s College in Maryland. She has
received the Shelley Memorial Award, the Juniper Prize and the
YM-YWHA Poetry Center Discovery Award. In 1999 she was elected a
Chancellor of The Academy of American Poets
