poet, essayist and art critic died last Friday at her home
in Greenwich Village. She was 47, and had been found
to be H.I.V.-positive at 30 years of age.
Our condolences go out to her husband, her family and friends. Poetry has lost a great and true and strong voice !
"Writing poems from within the seige state of the body," Stanley Kunitz wrote in 2000 as the nation's poet laureate, "Tory's language uncoils with such vitality, it would seem that speaking were an act of the immune system, a primary means of survival."
"HIV, Mon Amour" won several awards, among them the James Laughlin Award of the Academy of American Poets.
