"Lies"
You lied
to me. You twisted
the truth
until black became white
and all disparities were lost
in the melting pot
of existence. And in those
carefree days,
I still trusted you
with an innocence
untainted by time and by society.
It was a wonderful
illusion
while it lasted. But now
I have taken off
my rose-colored glasses
and I have seen
beyond the veil.
And only now
do I realize
the terrible bleakness
from which you spared me.
The world is changing
before my eyes
and I am powerless to stop it;
beauty fading,
people dying,
hatred and prejudice
pervading our souls.
I wish
that I could gaze
through those child’s eyes again,
but the weighty
knowledge
stills burns in my mind--
because the truth is harsher than the cruelest lie.
