Los Osos Extremes
A boardwalk meanders
through elfin forest,
acres of runty oaks
interrupted by thistles.
Sun-basking lizards
scatter before us.
We adventure
in secret groves,
crawl
through gargoyle
branches.
Miles later,
we hobnob with giants.
The dusty trail pulls us
along a dry creek bed
into fairyland woods.
Drifting lint
transforms into moths
flickering toward
fallen debris, spanish moss,
an aging crone's hairdo.
Rotting bark decays
into caricature faces.
Summer wind
mimics the gurgle and purr
of running water.
Crusty behemoths raise
twisted limbs
from crumbling leaf mosaics,
try to yank their own roots
from the anchoring soil.
Moonstone Beach
A little boy
gouges wet sand,
leaves weeping holes
along the dark seashore.
Pelicans belly-flop
from thin summer air,
then disappear
in the wrinkled green ocean.
Surf sculpted adobe
leers from eroded cliffs
like a Neanderthal clan
of primitive totems.
I wander damp gravel,
crunch bulbous kelp,
remember your kisses,
consider my options.
Sleek gull arrows
streak the colorless sky.
Distant fog smudges
uncertain horizons.
