PASTORAL 1

the man with no legs
self-employed and
gray as road dust
strolls the avenue
on a square-foot board
and tiny wheels,
pushes the sidewalk
with trowels for knuckles

the clubfooted dwarf
head full size
feet big as a man's
arms like flippers
dangling at her side
follows
the man with no legs
into the pool hall's
black escape
stale with smoke and beer,
pupils like lakes of oil
lying stagnant in green fields
