Hometown Visit
In my hometown at 35
I can not help but stare.
Scanning for my own age among the produce,
age-regressing faces,
leading always to pointless guesses,
unlikely probabilities,
impossible fantasies.
Almost anyone would do,
a rock to anchor me in this place,
to validate my former address.
For all my memories could hang weightless
on a single smile from a past acquaintance.
