How can you hear my voice?
I revive, at the toll from the belfry.
As shaft of moonlight opens your blue eyes;
With a kiss on my pale face, you murmur,
The drowsy words into my pointed ear.
What do you love about me? My darling,
My fluffy furs, round eyes, or my brown wings.
How can you see the sorrow in a bat
Born in a cave? With a broken wing,
I can no longer spiral up and waltz.
My ultrasonic cry is no longer heard
In the silent city of the human herd.
As meteor sweeps across the black sky;
I dream of riding rapid air two miles high
With my mouth opened and teeth bare.
Swarming out of the dark echoing cave
Into a tornado; numerous shadows
Undulate through the trees as a whirlpool.
Your fair face won’t tether me any more.
You lay in bed as quietly as the spider
On the dewy web across the old twig.
I hear your breath by the echoing waves
Striking at my downy fur. But will you,
Will you ever hear my muted wish?
As the meteor sweeps across the sky.
