Friend Made Only Once
I sat by a man, homeward bound,
He dripped loneliness and nursed a scotch and soda,
Then another,
From Alaska, staying in Salt Lake cause his wife likes it in the winter,
I shared with him, stories of short, of school,
About my friend from Cordova, other things,
He shared of his times at Oklahoma A and M,
Engineering, class of '52,
A smile came with a sip of his friend,
He blessed me,
He went on with his wife, I with mine,
Home,
To our families,
I think of him now, myself being warm, loved,
Hoping that he remembers me, for I will not forget him,
The tiny, distant warmth from a strangers words,
With none of these came his name,
Single malt,
Four bucks a shot,
Sharing.
