Novocain

Open wide;
which tooth is it now?
I'll slide the needle in
nice and easy;
you won't feel a thing.
But just forget the needle;
only talk with me--
I'll have the same effect.
We'll laugh, gurgle coffee,
crack toothy grins;
we'll nod knowingly,
touch each other's hand,
in our shiny eyes reflect
our shimmering black souls.
All the road signs
and yellow flags of friendship,
yet no current can surge past
the glacier lodged between us.

Pearls

It's the problem of my generation;
we have so many baubles to live for.
Cartier diamond priced educations,
aspiring medical and lawyer beaus,
espresso intensity in each hour.

Yet a dark, hungry cavern draws us in
as we read the litany of martyrs
lapped up by flames and Roman lion mouths,
fresh soldier faces pawned for rich men's
dreams,
souls catapulted towards a divine call.

A ripe dozen pearls string down before us
without one brave enough to break the
thread.
