the obsession of number is
the beast stacking the 
hand mountain

the hands curve upwards

thrown out
the spaces of station
memory

veggio senza occhi -- Petrarch

the spiral
of an eye below a 
wooden sky

the ladder swings
then stops

I watch numbers in my hands
as arches lead a colonnade of
memories to question
the colliding
of hands with the night

only stars and fireflies

in the morning through broken weave
the patterns lead 
in stone
to a center

a hand and the loving hour
or the motion towards
night
applying your mystic
dream of another
dynasty or at least
another crete
and perhaps
there is an end 
to stop the
memory of 
sappho and the hundred hands
that grasp her
with the story of morning
