ALL THE FUTURES

Twenty-one toys on the living room floor
and baby plopped between, looking left,
right, then behind. So many choices
for so small a life. She picks up a block
and shows it to me, as if to ask, “Grandpa,
is this the one?” I smile and say, “Purple
block,” but think how one thing builds
upon another, how the golden walls
of Troy lasted a thousand years, as flesh
fell. With the other hand, she takes
the blue rubber egg with pebbles
inside, shakes it, hands that to me
without knowing all the eggs she carries,
all the futures inside her, waiting.
